One of the most important factors of a standardized test is time. You'll only be allowed a certain number of minutes for each section, so it is very important that you use your time (1) _______. The most important time strategy is pacing yourself. Before you begin, take just a few seconds to survey the test, noting the number of questions and the sections that looks easier than the rest. Then, make a rough time schedule based (2) _______ the amount of time available to you. Mark the halfway point on your test and make a note beside that mark of the time when the testing period is half over.
Once you begin the test, continue moving. If you work slowly in an attempt to make fewer mistakes, your mind will become bored and begin to wander. You'll end up with far more mistakes if you're not concentrating. If you take too long to answer questions that stump you, you may end up (3) _______ out of time before you finish. So don't stop for difficult questions. Skip them and move on. You can come back to them later if you have time. A question that takes you five seconds to answer counts as much as one (4) _______ takes you several minutes, so pick up the easy points first. (5) _______, answering the easier questions first helps build your confidence and gets you in the testing groove.

Many people are unaware of how many of the products we use come from petroleum and natural gas. The United States uses more than two tons of petroleum products annually. That is almost 1200 lb of chemicals each year for a man, a woman and a child in the United States, a staggering total of 225 billion pounds of chemicals from petroleum, and to a lesser extent of natural gas.
Of the vast amount of petroleum and natural gas we consume, more than 90 percent is burned as fuels. Only about 0.5 percent is used for the manufacture of the petrochemicals by the chemical industry. These petrochemicals vary widely in their functions and include such products as medicines, detergents, rubber and chemicals. Finally, about 15 percent of the oil and natural gas is used as raw material for plastics. These small percentages translate into the production of billions of pounds of polymers that yield many different and useful products.
In post World War II years, the United States was flooded with domestic and imported items of extremely low cost, low quality and limited lifetime. This led to the image of “cheap plastics” with low durability. Today, however, The image of plastics has changed. Plastics perform and extremely broad range of functions, from heart valves and artificial kidneys to ski boots, nonstick surfaces, super glues, and spacecraft parts, and they compete with natural products in durability. No other material except for plastics could perform all these different functions.
Plastics are replacing more and more parts of your car. The use of 1 lb of plastic can replace an average of 3.5 lb of metal in an automobile. An automobile with 400 lb of metal substituted for plastic would weight about 1000 lb less, which increases its gas and its gas mileage by about 3mi/gal. The fuel savings are estimated to be about 160 million barrels of oil annually. That is more than total amount used by the chemical industry as raw materials to make the polymers.
As another example, synthetic polymer fibers are commonly used in fabrics, for both, economical and practical reasons. If the world’s synthetic fibers were replaced by cotton, this would require an additional 40 million acres of farmland.
Certainly the use of polymer plastics will increase. One can expect to find more applications in home construction and furniture because of the unlimited design fredom of plastic. Plastic will be used more in drink containers and food packing. The 700 billion gallons of liquid consumed each year in the United States will find their way to their consumer more and more in plastic bottles. Diseased and malfunctioning parts of the body will become a plastic society.

The air above our head is becoming cleaner. A breath of fresh air has been running right round the planet for the past five years. The planet is apparently purging itself of pollution. Paul Novell of the University of Colorado, the co-author of a report on this phenomenon says, “It seems as if the planet’s own cleaning service has suddenly got a new lease of life. Suddenly, there are a lot of changes going on up there”.
Estimates of the death toll from urban smog have been steadily rising, so the new cleaner trend could have significant consequences for life expectancy in cities as well as for the planet itself. The sudden and unexpected reversal of several decades of worsening pollution extends from the air in city streets to the remotest mid-Pacific Ocean and Antarctica.
Among the pollutants which have begun to disappear from the atmosphere are carbon monoxide, from car exhaust and burning rain forests, and methane from the guts of cattle, paddy fields, and gas fields. Even carbon dioxide, the main gas behind global warning, has fallen slightly.
There are two theories about why pollution is disappearing. First that there is less pollution to start with due to laws to cut down urban smogs and acid rain starting to have a global impact. Second, that the planet may be becoming more efficient at cleaning up.
The main planetary clean-up agent is a chemical called hydroxyl. It is present throughout the atmosphere in tiny quantities and removes most pollutants from the air by oxidizing them. The amount of hydroxyl in the air has fallen by a quarter in the 1980s. Now it may be reviving for two reasons: ironically, because the ozone hole has expanded, letting in more ultraviolet radiation into the lower atmosphere, where it manufactures hydroxyl. Then the stricter controls on vehicle exhausts in America and Europe may have cut global carbon monoxide emissions, thereby allowing more hydroxyl to clean up other pollutants.
