WORK ON YOUR PHRASAL VERBS ~ HELPING & RECOVERING 
1. carry on [a] If you carry on, you continue doing an activity. 
 - We are determined to carry on with our work. 
NOTE. You can also use go on. 
[b] If you carry on when you are in a difficult or unpleasant situation, you manage to continue 
with your normal, everyday activities. 
 - Some people carry on as if nothing has happened. 
NOTE. You can also use go on. 
2. clean up. [a] If you clean up something that is dirty or untidy, you get rid of it by wiping, 
sweeping, etc. 
 - Anne cleaned up the house and sat at the kitchen table. 
[b] If you clean up or clean up a place or person, you clean them. 
 - Consider for a moment the costs of cleaning up rivers and beaches. 
NOTE. You can also use clear up. 
3. get through. [a] If you get through a task, you succeed in finishing it. 
 - I got though a lot of work this morning.

 - I grabbed the railing and held on. 
[b] If you hold on, you manage to continue in a difficult situation. 
 - If you hold on, things will get better eventually. 
NOTE. The opposite of hold on is give up. 
6. hold on to. [a] If you hold on to something that is in your hand, you grip it tightly so that it 
cannot fall or cannot be taken away from you. 
 - She walked slowly down the steps, holding on to the hand-rail. 
NOTE. You can also use hold onto. 
[b] If you hold on to someone, you keep your arms around them. 
 - She held on to him for support. 
NOTE.You can also use hold onto. 
7. keep on. If you keep on, or keep on doing something, you continue doing something and do 
not stop. 
 - My hands were shaking but I kept on. 
 - I kept on running until I had reached the house. 
NOTE. You can also use carry on. 
8. look after. If you look after someone or something, you take care of them and make sure they 
have what they need. 
 - My mother looks after the baby during the week. 
9. leave behind. If you leave something behind, you stop having a past feeling or experience and 
progress to something new. 
 - This is your chance to leave the past behind and make a new start. 
 - It can be hard to leave behind these bad experiences. 
10. live with. If you have to live with something unpleasant, you have to accept it and carry on 
with your life or work. 
 - The job involved a lot of stress, but I learnt to live with it. 
NOTE. You can also use pu t up with. This is more informal. 
11. protect from. To protect someone or something from something bad or harmful means to 
prevent it from happening or having a harmful effect. 
 - The soldiers were there to protect their country from invasion. 
 - Make sure you cover up and protect yourself from the sun. 
NOTE. You can also use protect against. 
12. settle down. If something settles down, it becomes calmer or stops changing. 
 - When things settle down a bit you'll have to come and visit us. 
NOTE. You can also use calm down. 
13. take in. If you take someone in, you allow them to live at your house or in your country. 
 - After the hurricane, neighbours offered to take homeless families in. 
 - Governments in the region may have to take in large numbers of refugees. 
14. turn around. If someone or something turns your life around or if it turns around, it changes 
completely, usually becoming better. 
 - An opportunity like this could turn your entire life around. 
 - The organization helps people turn around their lives. 
 - My life turned around when I met Tom.
