Radar is an electronic device that can “see” great distances despite fog, rain, snow, clouds, and darkness. It can find and accurately locate missiles, aircraft, ships, cities, rainstorms and mountains. Radar uses radio waves instead of light waves, which the human eye uses in seeing. This makes it possible for radar to locate many kinds of objects at far greater distances than the eye can see.
Today, networks of radar look out stations guard the United States and Canada 24 hours a day against long – range missiles and airplanes. Patrol planes and ships search the oceans with radar for hostile ships and aircraft. Airports use radar to guide planes safely to earth in fog or storms. Ships use it to steer clear of other vessels or icebergs. Radar helps weathermen warn of approaching hurricanes and tornadoes.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31. The night of 31st October was believed in the past that dead people appeared from their graves, and which is now celebrated in the US, Canada and Britain. It is a time when children have parties, dress up as witches (with a pointy hat and black gown), wolves, vampires, and ghosts. Many children dress up as movie characters or a favorite superhero.
	They make lanterns out of pumpkins (large and round vegetables) from which the inside has been removed, and play “trick or treat”, a traditional activity at Halloween, in which children dress in costumes and visit houses. At each house they say “trick or treat”. This means that they will play a “trick”, or joke, on the people in the house unless they are given a “treat”, eg. sweets or money. Most people prefer to give treats rather than having tricks play on them. The practice of “trick or treat” began in the USA in the 1930s but is now common in Britain also. But Halloween is not just for children. Many adults enjoy showing off their costumes at Halloween parties!

Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of the dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worldwide contributions to humanity. Originally, there were five awards: Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty seven years after the first awards ceremony.
Nobel’s original legacy of nine million dollars was invented, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards, which vary from $ 30,000 to $ 125,000.
Every year, on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma and money) are presented to the winners. Some politics plays an important role in the judges’ decision. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes.
No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes
