Part 4: There are FIVE mistakes in the following passage. Underline the words that need
correction and write them in the space provided. The first one has been done as an example.
1 A young man from Germany naming Levi Strauss arrived in California in 1850. He went
there to sell things to the miners. He saw that the miners needed strong pants, so he began to
make it. He used cloth that people made tents from. He put rivets on the pockets to make them
strong because the men put rocks in their pockets. These pants are very strong and lasted a
5 long time. The pants became very popular immediately. Later Mr. Strauss started making
Jeans from cotton cloth from Nimes, France. People called this cloth Denim. Denim was
popular in the fifteen century. Christopher Columbus used denim for the sails of his ship.
Sailors in Genoa, Italy, wore denim pants. The word “Jeans” comes from the words “Genoa”.
Mr. Strauss made the first Jeans in the United States, but the idea and the kind of cloth came
10 from Europe. The name came from France and Italian. Jeans were always blue until
presently. People used indigo to dye them. Indigo is the older dye of all in the world. Most
Jeans have blue threads going across and white threads going up and down. These two colors
make denim look different from other kinds of cloth.
III. READING COMPREHENSION (4 points)
Part 1: Read the following passage and circle the best answer to the questions.
America's foods began to affect the rest of the world - not only raw staples such as wheat and
corn, but a new American cuisine that spread throughout the world. American emphasis on
convenience and rapid consumption is best represented in fast foods such as hamburgers, French
fries, and soft drinks, which almost all Americans have eaten. By the 1960s and 1970s, fast foods
became one of America's strongest exports as franchises for McDonald's and Burger King spread
through Europe and other parts of the world, including Russia and China. Traditional meals
cooked at home and consumed at a leisurely pace - common in the rest of the world, and once
common in the United States - gave way to quick lunches and dinners eaten on the run as other
countries mimicked American cultural patterns.
By the late 20th century, Americans had become more conscious of their diets, eating more
poultry, fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer eggs and less beef. They also began
appreciating fresh ingredients and livelier flavor, and cooks began to rediscover many world
cuisines in forms closer to their original. In California, chefs combined the fresh fruits and
vegetables available year-round with ingredients and spices sometimes borrowed from immigrant
kitchens to create an innovative cooking style that was lighter than traditional French, but more
interesting and varied than typical American cuisine. Along with the state's wines, California
cuisine eventually took its place among the acknowledged forms of fine dining.

Part 3: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a
disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes
which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents
expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are
ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents
are very supportive of their child. Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his
parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for
him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows
very little about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never
makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling. Winston Smith, Michael’s friend,
however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful musicians, and they set too high a
standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him for
every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always
afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.
