Although injuries from texting and driving are usually more serious, injuries from texting and walking occur more often. More people get injured while walking than driving. Walking in a straight line is not easy. We can forget how to walk properly.
There are a few reasons why texting and walking is dangerous. People cannot see when they look at their keyboard. Their minds are somewhere else – they are not thinking about walking safely. Those who text while walking are more likely to trip, bump into something or someone, twist their ankle, have serious head injuries or step into traffic if they're distracted while walking. A University of Buffalo professor said over 6,000 people visited his hospital last year because they were injured while texting. He said the worst cases are head injuries. When a pedestrian is tossed into the air after being hit by a car, he/she has nothing to protect the head, and the damage can be serious.
To avoid being injured, people should check the streets, keep their eyes off of their phones until they reach their destination. If you must talk or text, pull out of the stream of pedestrian traffic and stop walking while doing it.
