THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
The Statue of Liberty stands alone on an island less than two miles from Manhattan. The only way to reach the island is by ferry. “She”, as American people call her, is the symbol of liberty, that is freedom and independence. “Lady Liberty’ faces the sea and has New Jersey behind her. She holds a golden torch and welcomes ships to America. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people. The creator of the statue was Bartholdi. It was made in France and took 11 years to build. When it was ready, it was shipped to New York. During that time, the Americans built a huge base for the statue.
When ‘Lady Liberty’ was ninety years old, she began to show her age. A team of French and American experts restored her. Every day, hundreds of visitors take the boat from Battery Park to Liberty Island. Either they take the lift from the base to her feet or they walk up the 390 steps to the crown top at the statue’s head. There they can admire the beautiful view of Manhattan and New York Harbor.
