 Tet – the lunar New Year- is an deeply emotional time for the Vietnamese. After a year devoted to the toil of earning a living, the days of Tet offer people time to play their respect to their family ancestors: to eat and drink their fill with friends and family; and more recently to spurge on new furniture and clothes.
 Like a western Christmas and New Year has rolled into one. Tet time pulses with spiritual, emotional, and material expressions. 
 Traditionally, old shoes and hats were burned a week before New Year’s Eve, along with paper money and a letter asking three Gods of the kitchen for blessings and good luck for the New Year. A carp was released into water, to become a dragon that bears the message and the three Gods to Heaven.
 Nowadays, the time before Tet means more than a new a pair of shoes and a hat. Major households purchases are made, rooms are painted, and houses tidied up, with the belief that a fresh and prosperous look on the first day will set the tone for the rest of the year. Kitchens are stocked up as well, ahead of a steady stream of visitors and shops closed for a week or so.
