One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water. Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. But acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. But they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial wastes which pour into the lake every day. Even where law existed, the government did not have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignores the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world’s water surface. But it is the dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something now.

We have been harnessing the wind's energy for hundreds of years. From old Holland to farms in the United States, windmills have been used for pumping water or grinding grain. Today, the windmill's modern equivalent - a wind turbine - can use the wind's energy to generate electricity.
Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind.
Wind turbines can be used as stand-alone applications, or they can be connected to a utility power grid or even combined with a photovoltaic (solar cell) system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built close together to form a wind plant. Several electricity providers today use wind plants to supply power to their customers.
Stand-alone wind turbines are typically used for water pumping or communications. However, homeowners, farmers, and ranchers in windy areas can also use wind turbines as a way to cut down on the use of electricity. Thus, they pay less money for their bills.
Small wind systems also have potential as distributed energy resources. Distributed energy resources refer to a variety of small, modular power-generating technologies that can be combined to improve the operation of the electricity delivery system.
1. Wind turbines can be used for..
A. water drainage	B. generating electricity	C. telecommunications	D. growing plants
2. The word “harnessing” in line 1is closest in meaning to.
A. testing	B. playing	C. producing	D. controlling
3. The phrase “take advantage of” in line 5 means..
A. pay attention to	B. cause damage to	C. make use of	D. take into consideration
4. According to the passage, what is NOT true?
A. Wind turbines make customers pay more for their electricity.
B. Wind turbines can be used for water pumping.
C. Wind turbines can capture most wind energy at the height of 100 feet and above.
D. Wind turbines help the residents cut down on money used to pay for electricity.

A. wind is limited B. many wind turbines can’t form a plant
