Thẩm Tâm Vy, October 22nd, 2018 PRACTISE LISTENING LESSON 03 PRACTISE LISTENING 03 – ADVANCED (enclosed with 2 audio files at two speeds: slow & normal) Tom: I think the environment’s really important because we’re destroying our planet. I mean, we’re polluting rivers, cutting down forests, killing animals. And the biggest problem is that, because we produce greenhouse gases, we’re even changing the Earth’s climate. Did you know, the ten warmest years in history have been since 1990? In the future, it’s going to get much worse, and that’ll affect me and my generation. In this century, the planet will get hotter by up to five degrees. That will cause more droughts, more storms, and more hurricanes. In 2006, there were so many hurricanes that they ran out of names for them! The ice caps at the poles are starting to melt, too, so the sea level’s going to go up by a few metres. Some countries might even disappear! Imagine that. What can we do about it? Well, everyone can do something. For example, you can save energy at home, walk to school, or recycle paper and batteries. You can join a green organisation like Greenpeace and protest. Some people say it’s no fun being green, and it’s all too serious. But I’m in a group called Trees for London and we have street parties to raise money. You can have fun and help the planet at the same time! Keith: Personally, I’m bored of ‘the environment’. We get it at school and from our parents. We get it on TV, too. People say the world’s going to end but everybody still drives their cars and flies to Spain on holiday. I suppose there are some problems. The biggest problem here in London is air pollution, but it’s the same as smoking twenty cigarettes a day, isn’t it? Anyway, I don’t think we’ll have big problems in my lifetime. Maybe in my grandchildren’s lives. There’s no reason to worry now. People say the climate is changing and there’s global warming but the climate’s changed before. I mean, there was an ice age twenty thousand years ago! Anyway, I’d actually like the British climate to change. Hey, we’ll get hot, sunny summers every year! What do I do for the environment? Well, I love having a good time, shopping and partying, so I’ve got no time for cleaning rivers and all that ‘save the planet’ stuff. As soon as I can, I’m going to get a car and I’m NOT going to feel guilty about it. There’s no point getting upset about the future. Enjoy yourself when you can, that’s what I say.
