I don't want to alarm you. There is still enough sand left in the world to satisfy most holidaymakers but in many parts of the world beaches are literally being (45- washed) away and have to regularly replaced. First much of the sand for beaches (46- comes) from cliffs which crumble away (vỡ, lở) as they are pounded by the waves. To (47- protect) them, sea walls are often erected (dựng đứng). With cliffs no (48- longer) crumbling (vỡ, lở), the beaches are robbed of the material which would (49- normally) feed them. Beaches are also supplied with sand and gravel (sỏi) by rivers which bring it down from the mountains and hills. In some places rivers are being dammed and (50- reservoirs) are built to retain water. They trap more of the sediment so the rivers (51- take) less sand and gravel to the sea. This is happening in places like California and Scotland. In Egypt the building of the Aswan Dam has trapped the Nile silt (bùn, phù sa), so much less silt is being fed towards coastal (52- areas). That has meant the delta is now eroding instead of growing as before. Thirdly to improve the access to the beach many holiday resorts build a promenade (dạo chơi) along the sea front. Like some of the fortifications (củng cố) of cliff (53- faces), this usually has a flat vertical surface off which the waves (54- bounce). This helps wash the sand away down the beach and most of it is lost.

In pioneer days, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another raise a house, build a barn (kho), and clear fields. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment. But today in our cities and suburbs, neighboring is not common. A family may not even know the other families that live close by.
We live in an age of machines, and each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents’ time, women met while they hung out the washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed the lawns. Today, families stay inside with their automatic dryers. They can’t hear anything above the roar of their power lawn mowers. And the children are inside watching their favorite TV show.
Is the idea of being neighborly old-fashioned? In 1965, a power failure (hỏng nhà máy điện) hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left stranded (mắc cạn, khó khăn). Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and our largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other persons helped direct traffic. Trapped in elevators, people played word games and helped keep each other in good spirits.
In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important.

Foot-racing is a popular activity in the United States. It is seen not only as a competitive sport but also as a way to exercise, to enjoy the camaraderie (tình bạn, than thiết) of like-minded people, and to donate money to a good cause. Though serious runners may spend months training to compete, other runners and walkers might not train at all. Those not competing to win might run in an effort to beat their own time or simply to enjoy the fun and exercise. People of all ages, from those of less than one year (who may be pushed in strollers) to those in their eighties, enter into this sport. The races are held on city streets, on college campuses, through parks, and in suburban areas, and they are commonly 5 to 10 kilometers in length.
The largest footrace in the world is the 12-kilometer Bay to Breakers race that is held in San Francisco every spring. This race begins on the east side of the city near San Francisco Bay and ends on the west side at the Pacific Ocean. There may be 80,000 or more people running in this race through the streets and hills of San Francisco. In the front are the serious runners who compete to win and who might finish in as little as 34 minutes. Behind them are the thousands who take several hours to finish. In the back of the race are those who dress in costumes and come just for fun. One year there was a group of men who dressed like Elvis Presley, and another group consisted of firefighters who were tied together in a long line and who were carrying a fire hose. There was even a bridal party, in which the bride was dressed in a long white gown and the groom wore a tuxedo (áo lễ). The bride and groom threw flowers to bystanders (người xem), and they were actually married at some point along the route

TOPIC: Write about measures to take to protect endangered animals.
We now all know clearly that our environment is worsening day by day. Although countless efforts have been made to better the situations, the matter seems not to be much improved. Thousands of species have been vanishing, many other thousands are being threatened to be extinct. To solve the problems, or even to slower the process of extinction, there are a number of measures that should be taken to protect endangered animals.
The first problem is that people do not know much about the need to rare and endangered animals. Therefore, people should be taught about the importance of the wildlife and rare animals in the ecosystem. It also seems that projects to save endangered animals do not have sufficient funds, and that our mission is to raise enough funds to run these plans efficiently.
Another bad thing is that the habitats for wild animals are being seriously damaged or polluted. To better homes for the wildlife we should protect their habitats from being degraded and then help build up good habitats for all species to live in. Sometimes, people who live in or near the endangered species’ habitats have poor living conditions and rely mostly on wildlife products for their livelihood. Urgently, governments should raise these people’s living standards by providing them with jobs, and help them to live well with the nature.
The other reasons are that some countries do not have laws to protect the vulnerable animals, people keep buying fashionable wildlife products, and there are not enough wildlife habitat reserves. To deal with these challenges, governments all over the world had better soon pass and enforce laws to protect the nature, to make the purchasing products related to wild species and to build up more and more natural reserves for endangered ones to survive and develop.
Protecting the environment today is offering us and the next generations more prosperous future. To save the endangered species means to save the earth and to save ourselves.
