Rachel Carson was born in 1907 in Springsdale, Pennsylvania. She studied biology at college and zoology at Johns Hopkins University, where she received her master’s degree in 1933. In 1936, she was hired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, where she worked most of her life.
Carson’s first book, Under the Sea Wind, was published in 1941. It received excellent reviews, but sales were poor until it was reissued in 1952. In that year she published The Sea Around Us, which provided a fascinating look beneath the ocean’s surface, emphasizing human history as well as geology and marine biology. Her imagery and language had a poetic quality. Carson consulted no less than 1,000 printed sources. She had voluminous correspondence and frequent discussions with experts in the field. However, she always realized the limitations of her nontechnical readers.
In 1962, Carson published Silent Spring, a book that sparked considerable controversy. It proved how much harm was done by the uncontrolled, reckless use of insecticides. She detailed how they poison the food supply of animals, kill birds and fish, and contaminate human food. At the time, spokesmen for the chemical industry mounted personal attacks against Carson and issued propaganda to indicate that her findings were flawed. However, her work was proved by a 1963 report of the President’s Science Advisory Committee.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following question from 55 to 64.
Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein, eggs also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart diseases. One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more than two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has driven egg sales to plummet in recent years, which in turn has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These egg substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the advantage of having low cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to regular eggs is a new type of egg, sometimes called ‘designer’ eggs. These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low-flat diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diet, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans.
Egg producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol levels have brought mixed result. It may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that certain dietary fats stimulate the body’s production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one’s intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not help reduce the blood cholesterol level.

PART 2 : In about 140 words, write a paragraph about ADVANTAGES / DISADVANTAGES OF WORKING WOMEN.
------------ THE END ----------
ADVANTAGES OF BEING WORKING WOMEN
Women should be greatly encouraged to work outside the home. First, working women contribute to household income. They help their husbands pay household expenses and satify their children’s growing needs. Life is getting more and more expensive, so women’s salaries are becoming important to their househould budgets. Second, working women set good examples for their chilren. When children see how their parents work hard to support the families and share domestic responsibilities, they will learn from them. Such family values as hard work, responsibilities, and love are likely to pass down from generation to generation. Finally, working women are good educators for their children. Experiences at work widen their knowledge and gradually mature them. Through working they discover their strengths and weaknesses, become more knowledgable than can find good ways to educate their children. In short, women should be strongly supported to work outside the home.
DISADVANTAGES OF BEING WORKING WOMEN
Women should not be greatly encouraged to work outside the home because of the following reasons. First, women have their traditional roles such as housewives, housekeepers. Their responsibilities are doing housework looking after their children and husbands. They are also caregivers for elderly people. Second, They do not have enough time for two jobs : at work and at home. While men work at office and do not worry about household tasks, women have to do chores, take care of families after work. They even have no time to relax. Finally, because of their family responsibilities, women are not thought to be good workers. Tiring household chores may affect their work. They cannot concentrate or work effectively because they often worry about their kids and housework. In short, women should not be supported to work outside the home.
