LESSON 14 – March 30th, 2016
READING 1. RAIN MAKING
The (0) PROCESS of making rain is simpler than you might think. As warm, moisture-laden air (1).......from the surface of the earth, it cools and some of the air (2)........into tiny droplets that eventually become clouds. These droplets form around the microscopic particles such as dust and smoke which are (3).........in the air.
The science of weather modification is now big (4)....... . Using radar and sensitive equipment that (5)......atmospheric changes, weather moditiers fly above or below the clouds and spray them with billions of minute particles known as seeding agents. These particles either fall into clouds or are wafted into them from below by warm (6)....... . They then ‘attract’ tiny water droplets which (7)........around each one.
When enough droplets are attached, precipitation - the third and final (8).........in the process which returns water to the earth’s surface - occurs, and it rains. It may take as many as a million droplets to form a single raindrop. If the clouds contain ice crystals, the results are similar, but now snow will form instead of rain.
Current weather manipulation technology only allows scientists to ‘encourage’ a cloud that is (9).......heavy to produce rain. Some more ambitious scientists (10)..........a day when they will be able to (11).......rain from blue skies, but this is still in the far (12)........future.

READING 2. RISKY WORK
Most of us have a favourite television programme from childhood – one that we rushed
home from school to watch. Maybe it was a cartoon or soap opera or for many, like me, it was the iconic programme Blue Peter, the longest running children’s television programme in the world. 1) ____
The presenters of Blue Peter have become heroes to generations of viewers and one of the most remarkable of these is Helen Skelton. 2) ____ However, during her time presenting the programme she made an enormous impression on kids and adult viewers alike through the immensely difficult physical tasks she took on to raise money for charity.
 3) ____ In 2010 she kayaked down the entire length of the crocodile infested Amazon River in 30 days. She followed this with another very dangerous challenge in 2011 – walking along a 150-metre high wire between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, 66 metres above the ground. And she topped these challenges with the physically very demanding journey to the South Pole by ski and bicycle, breaking the world record for a cycle ride on snow and becoming the first person to reach the South Pole on a bike.
Helen’s courage and determination have made her a role model for many young people today, but she’s the last person to boast about her successes. 4) ____ She advises anyone getting involved in exploits like hers to be confident, not to think too much about the problems ahead and to do their best. One of the most important things according to Helen is to be able to laugh at yourself!
Now Helen is moving on and will probably take time out from her risky challenges to spend time with her family, maybe even settle down. 5) ____ However, I have a feeling that it won’t be too long before Helen gets the urge to challenge herself physically and break another couple of world records yet again.
